Forbes Field serves as the home field for the Middlebury baseball team, giving them one of the finest baseball facilities in New England. The composition of the field insures the team the earliest possible opportunity to play in the spring. Along with excellent drainage, the facility includes an in-ground sprinkler system, electronic scoreboard, dugouts and a panoramic view of the Green Mountains.
Middlebury’s indoor athletic facility, Virtue Field House, opened in January of 2015. The 110,000-square-foot structure houses the New Balance Foundation Track, a 200-meter track with nine 60-meter sprint lanes. Dedicated jumping and vaulting areas beyond the oval for field events are also part of the facility, as is McCormick Field, a 21,000-square-foot Field Turf surface inside the track for varsity, club, intramural and recreational purposes as well as throwing events.
The facility also features a cardio balcony with more than 30 pieces of exercise equipment; two locker rooms; a coaching suite; multiple batting cages; and a multipurpose/fitness area.
The massive field house, with more indoor area than a football field, also has numerous sustainability features including: eight 24-foot-wide ceiling fans to circulate air, LED lighting, recycled material in the flooring, super insulated walls and ceiling, abundant amounts of natural light and numerous spaces designed for multiple uses. Middlebury plans to seek an LEED Gold designation for the project from the U.S. Green Building Council.
